M.Sc., Animal Nutrition, Swine Specialist
Willem Steyn attained his Master of Science degree in Animal Nutrition at the University of Pretoria in 2010. Upon graduation he relocated to the Netherlands to start his international career as Swine Nutritionist for the international breeding company Topigs Norsvin International. During that time he also completed his Master’s degree in Business Administration at TIAS School for Business and Society in Utrecht, the Netherlands, to support his knowledge in science with a better understanding of the business environment.
Willem and his wife moved back to South Africa at the beginning of 2016 to start his own nutritional consultancy company; SwiNE Nutrition Management which focuses on developing feed programs and assisting hog farmers in unlocking the genetic potential of their animals. By utilizing his international experience and broad network of professional contacts,
Willem Steyn’s work is now making a positive contribution to the swine industry in South Africa.
Ph.D. – Consulting Monogastric Nutritionist
Dr. Kiarie is an enthusiastic monogastric nutritionist and Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph who has intense interest in contributing to intellectual and technical innovations for an efficient, safe, high quality, sustainable and profitable animal protein industry. He earned his Ph. D in Animal Science (Swine Nutrition & Management) at the University of Manitoba in 2008 where he assessed the effects of fiber degrading enzymes on enhancing nutrition and gut health of pigs. His experiences in academia and industry over the last ten years has given him unique insights into the global commercial feed industry and has allowed him to gain extensive academic contacts and collaborators in Europe, Asia, New Zealand, Africa and the Americas. He is actively involved in research projects, looking at feedstuff evaluations, alternative to in-feed antibiotics, nutrient metabolism, use of feed additives such as exogenous enzymes and different feeding strategies to improve gastrointestinal health and nutrient use in pigs and poultry. His research efforts have earned him several awards including the United States National Pork Board award for innovation in research. He holds a record of more than 110 conference presentations and published articles in international front-line peer-reviewed journals and has five patent applications.
Dr. Kiarie is widely recognised as a leading figure in the nutritional science behind successful pig and poultry feeding programs. He was born in Kiambu, a small farm town in Central Kenya, East Africa. Growing up in a small-scale mixed farm instilled his fascination with farm animals and as a result he pursued advanced degrees in animal science.
M.Sc. – Ruminant Nutrition, Beef Specialist
After receiving his M.Sc. in Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan in 1995, Jack moved to Olds, Alberta and provided beef and dairy nutrition services to clients and sales staff of several major feed companies. From 2012 – 2016 he worked with Merck Animal Health providing sales and technical advice to feedyard clients and veterinarians on beef cattle performance and health products eventually leading Merck’s sales team in western Canada.
In 2016, Jack partnered with a veterinarian and cattle producer to form Delta Animal Solutions Inc., which provides professional consulting services to feedyards and ranches, in all areas of nutrition and management of beef cattle. They also provide technical support and supply mineral products to some Alberta based feed dealerships.
Jack and his family run a small herd of commercial Angus cows west of Didsbury, Alberta. He is active in the community leading 4H clubs and coaching soccer teams.
